Produced in East Africa from the 1950's through the 1970's, this collection represents modern Makonde art in its fullest glory. The Makonde people drew from ancestral roots and the mpingo forests to reshape the human vision of abstract art and express their beliefs.
Browsing the galleries, you will see here that the predominant style is Shetani representing their controlling spirits. While believed to be mostly malevolent, many of these creatures range from evil looking to whimsical. Other styles seen here are Ujamaa, the Tree of Life, Mawingu or Clouds, with their soft edges suggesting human forms and Folk Realism, often showing traditional dress, lip plugs, ornamental scars and their tools. These carvings range in style and emotion transform ebony into humor, tragedy and drama.
